Zhiyun Smooth 4

The new Zhiyun Smooth 4 is a 3-axis handheld gimbal built for smartphones. And just like any other gimbal, the Zhiyun smooth4 aims to help you create stable and smooth footage while filming with your phone. The device is built from plastic, and it has a locking mechanism to keep the arm from swaying. It has a handheld grip, and it also includes a tripod base which screws onto the bottom of the Smooth 4 for a leveled shot.

On the front side of the grip are different buttons such as the record button, a switch for Pan Following Mode and Locking Mode. The difference between the two modes is that in Pan Follow Mode, the gimbal allows left to right panning while restricting vertical movements.

While in Lock Mode, the phone will stay in a fixed position; and this comes in handy when you shoot while walking fast.

Just like other gimbals, the Smooth 4 can also be adjusted to shoot in portrait mode for vertical footage. The smooth 4 has an object tracking feature, which means you can frame the object you want to track on screen and the gimbal will follow. It also supports time-lapse, motion lapse, Hyperlapse, and slow motions.

To use the device, you have to download the application and pair it with your phone through Bluetooth. Once connected, you can adjust the white balance of the footage, resolutions, flash, HDR, and other settings through the app. Now you are ready to start playing and filming with the gimbal.

Also, it has a focus/zoom wheel on the side of the gimbal. On the other hand, the Osmo mobile 2 has a very clean design with the core buttons that match your need.

Both gimbals have a lot of features such as; Timelapse/ Hyper-lapse , slow motion, and Object Tracking. However, the smooth 4 has one cool feature called the Vertigo Shot which is a dramatic tracking shot that allows you to create a really unique zooming effect.

Which one would I buy now?

It might be a bit tricky to say, if you have a very limited budget you might go with the Zhiyun Smooth 4. Keeping in your mind that the after sale service is limited. However, you might also consider having a smooth 4 if you will do a lot of “ run and gun “, as the control panel makes it easy for that type of filming.

If not, then Osmo mobile 2 has a better quality in both its software and hardware, especially that there have been some complaints from Android users regarding the app. And it also has an easy and clear control panel. For me, I have the Osmo mobile 2 and I’m very happy with the experience so far.
